THE RIVER

June 14, 2012

Jeff was sitting in the waiting area at the dentist last night waiting for Ruby to come out and there was this spectacular view out the window of the sunset. He said he didn’t know what caused it but the clouds formed a rainbow effect over the mountains, now Jeff thought it was wonderful but the rest of the people in the waiting room ignored it which is symptomatic of one of the big problems in Colombia. People take nature for granted and pollute the great resources they have. An example of this is the Medellin River that runs along the metro tracks threw Medellin and Bello as well as other stops on the railroad. People have told Jeff that the beginning of the river is a beautiful spot with clear water and clean shoreline. Well that may be but when the river gets to Medellin it turns muddy brown and as you get closer to Bello you begin to see mounds of garbage in the middle of the river and a shore line covered in garbage as well as unidentified liquids of various colors draining into the river. Jeff says he’s never seen pollution this bad and it makes him sad because it seems the people don’t care and don’t realize that clean water will eventually become harder and harder to find. He’s heard that they want to clean up the river but he thinks unless they first change the culture of the people living next to the river and get them to stop dumping in it and make some tougher environmental laws they’ll never clean it up. This is a truly beautiful country but if the people don’t start protecting it: it might just turn into one large garbage dump. Well as always it’s time for me to get of my soapbox and take a nap CIAO.
