I’m back

November 17, 2011

Hi I’m back did you guys miss me? Things have been pretty quiet around here but I think they’re going to start hop. Let’s see Breaking Dawn opens in the movies this Friday Jeff cooked muffins, without a oven, Colombia lost to Argentina, Jeff still hasn’t found a turkey for Thanksgiving so you can see thing are getting a little busier around here. It hasn’t rained in about a week so the river went from dirty brown to dirty green. They really need to start cleaning up along and the in the river part of the problem with doing that is that a lot of recycling is done along the river and whatever is left sometimes ends up in the river. Plus you have a heavy runoff when it rains and the poorest people seem to live right along the river. But being poor in Colombia doesn’t dampened the Christmas spirit. Hey I got to go chase a fly and piss off Ruby by jumping on the dining room table I’ll be back later.

Well as you can see Christmas is underway and its only Nov 13 I can’t wait to see what this part of the world looks like on Dec.24 I’ll have to get Jeff to go over to John’s house and take some pictures of our balcony. It looks like Ruby’s just getting started not that Jeff doesn’t like to decorate but he’s more into under the tree type of decorating. He says he’s going to wait a couple of days before he starts putting up the trains I think he’s afraid Hari will mess with them before Christmas, he should worry more about me then Hari I mess them up every year it’s my job I’m a cat. It looks like the towns are really starting to get ready Ruby says they have to start early because of all the parties and they don’t want people climbing ladders and such after a Christmas party. Oh here’s a little note to one of my readers that’s not a bell in the picture it’s my collar animals have had to carry ID longer then you guys.  Jeff takes the pictures if you want to know and if you want know, why he doesn’t show up in more take a look at this one, the guy looks like a blimp it’s scary he almost doesn’t fit in the shot. I think everybody’s decided to do secret Santa down here for Christmas you could go broke trying to get gifts for everybody in the family. Of course I won’t be included in that, first I don’t have a job and second I’m a family favorite so everybody should buy me something, come on guys a little catnip for the holidays please.

He won't have to gain weight to besanta this year

Flounders day off

November 10, 2011

Ok  I’ve been fed had a good night s sleep woke Jeff up at 7:30 the suns out and they’re going out to visit friend all and all looks like a great day to be a cat in Colombia. I even had a pigeon stop by this morning to say hello he had to be at least twice the size of the one s I used to see in NJ. Most of the birds that I used to see every day in NJ are a little bigger down here except the ones that look like morning doves these are a little smaller and they don’t coo they screech and the turkey Buzzards that I’ve mentioned before are big enough to pick up a small child. Thank god they’re afraid of people and I think they’re afraid of me; at least they don’t land on the building. Well what am I going to do today while I’m waiting for Jeff and ruby to get back, I think they went to see Rodrigo to send Jeff’s Kindle back for repair (he sat on it OUCH) ,let’s see I could scratch some furniture or cough up a hairball in the middle of the living room. Maybe I’ll just lay around and  do nothing, I’m really good at that well until they get back I really don’t have anything else to talk about maybe I’ll catch you guys later.

Flounders Great Adventure

November 9, 2011

You know I mentioned that Monday was a holiday well so is next Monday Its independence day for Cartagena. They average at least one holiday a month down here, yet they still manage to get things done although according to Ruby from now until sometime in January it’s just one big holiday. They celebrate Christmas a couple of ways down here. First of course, this being a Catholic country, is a religious way with a great many church functions. Secondly It’s an excuse to drink and party every night and day. Thirdly, and I think most importantly, they celebrate it as a children’s holiday with all sorts of events going on. As I find out more from Jeff and Ruby I’ll pass it along also I hope he will remember to take his camera with him when he goes out if he does I’ll post the pictures on Facebook and my blog. Its dinner time and I have to and make a nuisance of myself until Jeff FEEDS ME.

. The fires make the air smell good but they aren’t good for air quality, that’s something I think they’ll have some problems later if they don’t start enacting some laws regarding air quality. It would be a shame for this country to get like the rest of the industrial world and start suffering from poor air quality. Anyhow back Jeff and Ruby yesterday being Monday and a holiday down here(All Saints Day) they went to Ruby’s father’s house for lunch. While they were there Hader, Nelida, Marusio and his girl friend plus two of her uncle’s whom she hadn’t seen in a few years. Jeff sat as her 70 year old father and his 78 year old brother walked up the hill to the house. I say hill but it’s got a 30 degree incline, they had no trouble but Jeff and Ruby almost needed oxygen when they walked up. Elda, that’s Ruby’s stepmom, made a soup called Mondongo Jeff doesn’t like it so she fried some chicken with rice and salad for him. Elda is a really sweet person who raise canary’s and has a parrot, parakeets and two dogs, she just love animals and Ruby’s dad. Jeff really likes there they sit outside and the view is great they were watching storms  try and get over the mountain and  they would get just over the edge and the clouds would make the top of the mountain disappear. The views in this country can be spectacular but it’s all in the timing or in Jeff’s case if he remembers to bring the camera. Ruby enjoyed because she got to sit around drink beer and aguardiente (sort sambuca on steroids) and tell stories with her relatives. Well all things have to come to an end and they came home, good thing to I was getting hungry and my litter box need to be cleaned. After they fed me and they went and got ice cream the rest of the night was normal, that’s TV for a couple of hours then bed. Monday has started out rainy and doesn’t hold promise for much improvement. So Jeff, who’s not feeling too well today, is sitting in his recliner typing my story while I chill out by hi feet nice and warm. If anything spectacular happens the rest of the day or I wake up and feel like telling some more about what’s happening down here I’ll make sure Jeff posts it. In the mean time I’m just going to purr a little to make Jeff feel better and then its nap time

yummmmmmmmm ducksI guess he got upset with the Yummmmmmmmmm part

Ok I got the names and some of the ingredients and I sorry Val but they aren’t vegetarian  first up is Sancocho this is one of the dishes that people cook for family get togethers  it’s cheap and you make as much as you want. You start with chicken stock and then you add chicken or beef or both, potatoes, corn, yucca, plantain serve with rice. Next is Mondongo which is a soup, Bandeja Paisa it has beans, rice, and meat. Ajiaco a soup with chicken potatoes and corn. Moreilla which is like a sausage. Now this is more traditional for the holiday’s natilla which is served with Hojulas a thin corn bread and of course Empanadas sort of fried ravioli filled with just about anything you can think of also Arepas something like a cross between toast and a pancake and finally Sudado more rice meat and potatoes. As you can see I don’t have all the recipes for this food yet but it pretty much boils down to country cooking like Cajun without the spices everything gets cooked in one pot for the most part and you better like rice and beans if you want to eat down here they’re served with just about everything. Like I said earlier people will get some bricks and wood build a make shift wood burning stove and cook out in the street this time of year.Oh Oh nap time

I HAVE NO IDEA WHO SHE IS( CUTE THO)

The holiday season is beginning down here now with the street crews out hanging the lighted decorations on the light polls on the main streets. The department stores have had their Christmas displays up for a couple of weeks now and the small shops have taken down the Halloween displays and replaced them with Christmas ones. You see down here they don’t celebrate Thanksgiving so there’s no reason to put up fall displays or Thanksgiving displays so everybody just goes into Christmas mode. Down here that means cooking in the streets for family and friends and then sitting around eating and drinking. There are no 3 or 4 star restaurants in Bello if you want a sit down restaurant with wait staff you have to go the exit mall and go to an Italian restaurant called Forno, it’s really pretty good. There is plenty of really excellent food available in the local store front places all around town I’ll name the various local dishes and describe them as soon as Jeff learns how to spell them and Ruby gives him all the ingredients. Hopefully by next post. They did go back to Nachos restaurant tonight for dinner and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the dishes as well as the presentation he’s gotten rid of his partner and maybe that’s the reason for the improvement. He seems happier but Jeff told him he should remember how hard this business can be he has the busiest part of the year coming up. There will also the potential for conflict when the family gets together for the various parties. Well let me go and bother Jeff for those food names and I’ll get back to you later.

religeon is everywhere down here

Last night it was announced on TV that the military had killed the number one man in the FARC, the Colombia gorilla organization; Jeff doesn’t think it will make of a difference and that the guerillas will have to do something to demonstrate that they can still be a force even without their leader. The FARC have seven thousand fighters left and the government has been trying to get rid of them for forty years so to expect an end to their activities is a little premature. To be perfectly honest unless they star kidnapping and stealing cat food I could care less. This part of Colombia has seen enough violence with the Medellin Cartel specifically Pablo Escobar. He killed more people than most wars in other words he was not a nice guy. The people in Bello seem to be very laid Back and content to solve their problems quietly without violence. That does not mean that the city is crime free any city with a lot of uncontrolled casinos has crime the criminals just prefer the non violent approach to crime. You tell the people are like this when you look at the rest of the country and see the riots because the elections didn’t go the way they wanted. Maybe I should expand a little about the people of Bello. It’s difficult to tell the economic level because, at here people don’t exhibit the class structure usually associated with major differences in wealth. To give you an example just because Jeff doesn’t work people think he’s rich of course this is not true by any standard he has enough money to pay his bills with very little if anything left at the end of the month. But if you walk thru town unless you see the person get out of a Cadillac you won’t be able to tell his financial status. Everybody will look the same nobody is talking down to anybody. This is not to say all of Colombia is this way in Medellin there’s a noticeable difference between those who have and those who do not. This is because there is not much of a middle class in the big city you either have or don’t people with jobs in banks even though they don’t make a lot of money will dress to the nine’s and walk around with an attitude one that is accepted by the locals but that Jeff notices and doesn’t like. Back to Bello where the people are wonderful to Jeff and Ruby so friendly always with a smile no matter what their world is like. I’m going to take my 2 o’clock nap now and when I get back we’ll continue about the people of Bello

Jeff and Ruby took the cable car to Arvi` Park today and of course it rained and Jeff told ruby the forecast was for rain but when she looked out the window up at the small patch of sky they can see from the apartment the sun was shining. You remember of course how I said the sky changes very fast down here, well it did and they got rained on. The park isn’t complete yet but it is much better than last time when they were there. You know Jeff was walking down a trail and out popped a kitten now there in the middle of a national park, no homes, no roads, no buildings and he finds a friendly little kitten unbelievable. Then he finds a beautiful looking dog and just keeps going on. Well I guess I should talk more about the country and less about HIM It’s hard to appreciate how beautiful everything is when it’s cloudy and rainy, but Jeff said he fixed the pictures in Photo Shop. There on Facebook and there a couple of them here of course Ruby in them .Ok I have to go and scratch some furniture or something talk to you guys later.
