Flounders Great Adventure
November 5, 2011
Last night it was announced on TV that the military had killed the number one man in the FARC, the Colombia gorilla organization; Jeff doesn’t think it will make of a difference and that the guerillas will have to do something to demonstrate that they can still be a force even without their leader. The FARC have seven thousand fighters left and the government has been trying to get rid of them for forty years so to expect an end to their activities is a little premature. To be perfectly honest unless they star kidnapping and stealing cat food I could care less. This part of Colombia has seen enough violence with the Medellin Cartel specifically Pablo Escobar. He killed more people than most wars in other words he was not a nice guy. The people in Bello seem to be very laid Back and content to solve their problems quietly without violence. That does not mean that the city is crime free any city with a lot of uncontrolled casinos has crime the criminals just prefer the non violent approach to crime. You tell the people are like this when you look at the rest of the country and see the riots because the elections didn’t go the way they wanted. Maybe I should expand a little about the people of Bello. It’s difficult to tell the economic level because, at here people don’t exhibit the class structure usually associated with major differences in wealth. To give you an example just because Jeff doesn’t work people think he’s rich of course this is not true by any standard he has enough money to pay his bills with very little if anything left at the end of the month. But if you walk thru town unless you see the person get out of a Cadillac you won’t be able to tell his financial status. Everybody will look the same nobody is talking down to anybody. This is not to say all of Colombia is this way in Medellin there’s a noticeable difference between those who have and those who do not. This is because there is not much of a middle class in the big city you either have or don’t people with jobs in banks even though they don’t make a lot of money will dress to the nine’s and walk around with an attitude one that is accepted by the locals but that Jeff notices and doesn’t like. Back to Bello where the people are wonderful to Jeff and Ruby so friendly always with a smile no matter what their world is like. I’m going to take my 2 o’clock nap now and when I get back we’ll continue about the people of Bello
